I guess another name for this show is Strawberry Marshmallow, but that doesn’t really matter. This show was absolutely hilarious. It’s about these four little girls; Matsuri, Ana, Chika, and Miu; and Nobue who is the 20 year old sister of Chika. Matsuri and Ana are both in 5th grade while Chika and Miu are 6th graders so that age difference isn’t that big, but the fact that Nobue, who is considerably older is able to hang out with the little girls makes me wonder if she had any friends her own age (she says she has friends, but I guess we never get to see them). The show is a typical slice of life comedy having no real plot or conflicts and just follows the lives of the 5 girls (mostly just the 4, but most always Nobue was bunched in the group). Matsuri is the sweet innocent girl and Miu who is the trouble making problem child tends to pick on her making lots of funny situations. But probably one of the funniest lasting jokes is how the character Ana is English but can’t speak English and won’t speak Japanese at school because she wants to convince her classmates that she is an English exchange student and only speaks English. (yea its a mouthful of confusing twsits there, but she only speaks to Matsuri in class under her breadth and comfortable with all the others outside.) The fact that she doesn’t communicate in class tends to stall the lessons a tad and all the blame falls on the innocent bystander, Sasatsuka, who is always told to go stand in the hall from even the most minor outbreaks whether or not he did anything or even if it was his fault. (ex: Ana messes up the song, Sasatsuka stands in the hall)
The show is continually funny with Chika’s uptight nature and Nobue’s “dirty old man”-like actions that consist of dressing Matsuri up like a cat, dressing Miu as a doctor, dressing Matsuri and Ana up as nurses, and dressing the whole group up (save Matsuri) in Christmas Santa and reindeer constumes. Nobue always seems to have the costume or joke to fit the food; she just plain holds the whole group together as an adult.
I got into many little arguments with the friend that recommended this show to me on whether or not Miu is funny. I personally think she’s hilarious even if her jokes tend to be mean or dickish. I just think that most of the time the other characters are only funny through her. I guess I’ll leave the liking up you.
I say this is a must watch for anyone who liked Lucky Star because it kiiiinda reminded me of that similar comedy. I’m looking forward to watching the OVAs, which I probably won’t write about.
