This was a big arc and a great one too. It’s fairly obvious that I am looking forward to Enies Lobby even more, and I finally made it there!
The Water 7 arc starts with the Strawhats going to Water 7 to set their pose but finding that it is the leading island on shipwrights and carpenters. The island holds the most skilled shipwrights in the world… and who exactly needs a shipwright? But that doesn’t really matter right now because everyone knows that Franky joins the crew, but not in Water 7, towards the end of Water 7 is when he actually starts caring about them.
Anyways, they arrive at the island to find that it is kind of a sunken island that is sticking out of the sea, hence all the streets are canals and the building tower up into the sky. The Strawhats have already agreed to repair Going Merry for all of her efforts in their journeys so they decide to change the gold they got in Skypeia for money. Upon finally getting to a bank big enough to exchange it they find out that the gold is worth 300,000,000 beli. This large amount catches he eyes of some local gangsters, The Franky Family. (That one caught me off guard because I didn’t expect Franky to be a bad guy at first)
Before coming to the island the Strawhats meet an old woman named Kokoro in charge of operating the Sea Train (train tracks on floats an runs juuuust underneath the water). She recommends them to a shipwright, but when they finally reach that man they find out that he owns the sea train, is mayor of Water 7, and is boss of the most famous ship yard in the world. He and his Galley La Company accept the job and Luffy is proud to pay. The Franky Family has been trying to get closer and closer to getting the money and even gets a hold of 200 million at one point, but Luffy, Usopp, and Nami get it back with the help of a Galley La Worker. During the entire time at the ship yard that they are waiting for one of the workers, Kaku, to return from evaluating the ship, the Franky Family gang members are trying to get closer and closer to the money. This time they succeed. That really pissed me off. If Usopp can’t keep his hands on 200 million the first time, why would they give it to him a second time.
Alas, Usopp would just piss me off time and time again. He loses the money, he tries to get the money, and he loses at that too. After Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, and Chopper all beat up the Franky Family, save Franky himself who has already boarded the sea train to go spend the money, They have to break the news to Usopp of what Kaku said after his ship evaluation. Merry can no longer be repaired and they will have to get a new ship. I guess this was the last straw for our long nosed friend because he decides to leave the crew, but his parting words request a duel with Luffy for Merry. The duel between Luffy and Usopp was surprisingly awesome even though it did start off with Usopp’s regular antics and ended with him losing.
During all of this Robin has gone missing at the sight of a large masked man and his one exhange of words “CP9,” so Sanji and Chopper spend their time looking for her. The tension keeps growing with the return of Franky finding that his home has been destroyed and his entire gang has been beaten and is injured. Luffy goes back to the shipyard with Nami to discuss a new ship, but find Franky waiting for them. A battle ensues between the cyborg Franky and Luffy. It is interrupted by the Galley La workers who are now accusing Luffy of an attempted assassination of Iceburg the Galley La boss and mayor to Water 7 because Iceburg states that he saw Nico Robin during his attempted murder. This makes them wonder what is really happening with Robin since she has been missing.
The entire town is against them and is frantically searching for them before the coming of Aqua Laguna (some big ass high tide and Tsunami wave) which will submerge the majority of the city under water. Sanji and Chopper finally meet up with Robin only to find that she has left the crew. They can’t accept. Chopper returns to Luffy while Sanji disappears to tail Robin and scour the city. Based on her words they determine that a second attack on Iceburg is eminent so they keep a watch on his mansion for Robin. The entire Galley La Company is on guard of the mansion because of the “threat” that the Strawhats impose on his life. The masked CP9 members make there move along with Nico Robin and so the Strawhats go after them.
CP1, CP2, CP3, etc. all the way to CP8 (Ciphor Pol) are the top government sects. CP9 is the unknown 9th division filled with a select team of incredibly strong special agents. These agents are after the blueprints to Pluton, an ancient weapon of such destruction that it can destroy the world. These blueprints have been passed down for generations and the only person who can revive the ancient weapons is Nico Robin due to her extensive knowledge on Poneglyphs (historical hieroglyphics). The CP9 members are responsible for elimination Iceburg and claiming those blueprints so that the government can end the pirate age. And inside Iceburg’s bedroom we find out that the CP9 agents are actually 2 Galley La foremen (Lucci and Kaku), Iceburg’s personal assistant (Kalifa), and the local barkeep (Blueno). Each member had been undercover for 5 years and had kept their real abilities a secret. In actuality the undercover agents are all masters of Rokushiki (basically 6 superhuman skills, ex: shigan=bullet-like fingers, tekkai=steel body, soru=super speed) and two have known Devil Fruit powers. It’s fairly obvious that the CP9 agents are stronger than the Strawhats and thus the true meaning behind Robin’s betrayal becomes known. Robin betrays the government to protect the Strawats from falling victim to the “Buster Call” which is the strongest military tactic that calls 5 admirals and 10 warships together on 1 ship.
The Cp9 make off on the Sea Train towards Enies Lobby with Robin, Usopp, and Franky (and unknowingly Sanji because he sneaks on board). Luffy, Chopper, Zoro, Nami, and the rest of the Franky Family chase them down on a prototype sea train. On board CP9’s train, Sanji, Franky, and Sogeking (Usopp put on a mask and turned awesome) cause trouble.
The arc ends with CP9 finally reaching Enies Lobby with Franky and Robin. Usopp and Sanji’s car has been detached from the rest of the train and are sitting on the track while Luffy and the rest are still in pursuit.
I am looking forward to Enies Lobby and Luffy’s gears so much. Gunna be epic.
