This episode was pretty cool because it got me to respect Megumi a little more. The story was all about why Megumi hates personas and shadow pulling/extraction and whatnot. The group, Jun, the girl from the hospital that was on Ryou’s list, and some random guy from some cafe or something went on a trip to a beach side house. On the way there, the girl from the hospital (bear with me with people I don’t care to learn the names of) remembers doing a shadow extraction with Kanaru. This irritates Megumi and she goes off on another little tangent but when a truck passes by their car she has a flashback to a former time in a vehicle and completely forgets what she was talking about. Whenever she remembers this past event her eyes widen and she perks up; simultaneously Jun does the same.
Whenever the group arrives at their destination, Jun pulls Shin aside and asks him if Megumi ever had a little brother. This question points out a little more of Jun’s power. His sense of perception is not even limited by thoughts. Thoughts of another person seem to be completely accessible to him. This is pointed out a little more during a card game. The group was playing B.S. (bullshit, liar, etc. whatever name you know it by) If you don’t know what this game is I believe I can explain it a bit. The point is to lay down the cards consecutively 1,2,3… and if you don’t have a 4 you can lay down any other card and call it a 4. If something doesn’t call that out as a lie (“B.S.”) by the next turn then you are safe. First person to lose all their cards wins. I think that’s how the game goes. Anyways Jun calls B.S. on the guy the random guy from the cafe that was their driver for the trip. Apparently he had done it at least once before. I may be reaching when I try to relate that to Jun’s power, but the fact that it only showed Jun call a B.S. makes me wodner if they are just trying to drop more clues about Jun’s powers.
The real event happens in the end of the episode, as most events do. Takuro sneaks out to train his persona. Jun and Shin notice this and follow him out to watch. The fun is quickly interrupted by Megumi who protests against using the persona. She states that using a persona will only hurt people and kill you. This evokes another flashback, which Jun also catches. His thoughts about her having a younger brother are confirmed. We see bits and pieces of Megumi’s past. When she was very little she was in the car with her brother and there was a crash. This caused the death of her brother. During the crash her eyes glow and she calls out a persona. We don’t know if she accidentally caused the crash with the extraction, accidentally killed her brother during the crash, or just failed to save him in the ruckus. We do know why she hates all the stuff though. She blames them for the death of her brother.
During this, Kanaru and the cafe driver guy come running up all worried that everyone had gone missing. They conclude that the only other person missing is the hospital sempai. The fact that the older girl is missing alert Megumi. Once before in the episode she had run to the lighthouse to check on her sempai. The two have a past together on a dance team and the older girl was once suicidal. This makes a second time that Megumi is madly dashing to the far off lighthouse to check on her friend, but this time, her fears are actually turning into reality.
It’s not exactly how one would expect a suicide to look like because there are two people at the distant lighthouse. One is the target girl and the other is the mysterious girl that has appeared multiple times leaving trails of whale feathers. The strange girl is merely floating in front of the other. There is no way any of them can get there fast enough on foot so Takuro tries using his persona to fly over to the girl. He, of course, sucks controlling the thing right now (hence the training) and cannot fly straight. Then Shin begins to pull his out. This alerts the girl in front of the hospital sempai. She then covers the large distance in a split second and stares Shin down. Shin’s persona, released by now, slashes through the girl. She fades into particles, but to his surprise she is standing right behind him. Then all that is left is a whale feather.
The last person we can rely on is Megumi, but she has had bad luck with her persona in the past. Fortunately, she calls it, controls it, and saves her friend. The older girl just lies there and Jun comments on her heart dying. I guess the mysterious girl killed her or it has something to do with her persona having been stolen in the past. Something like a delayed reaction to that. All this is caught on video by the cafe driver guy.
Whale Feathers: these are those odd things that remain when the mysterious girl vanishes and when a Reverse has occurred. They float around the city and by the seaside. Shin, Jun, and Ryou’s mother and father wrote story picture books and their last one was about these beautiful white feathers. They have something to do with the mystery of personas and reverses. They don’t seem to be physically transient at first because they most always disappear. When Megumi goes to pick up her friend at the hospital for the trip, her friend sees a floating whale feather on the roof, but it shortly disappears. Later in the episode her friend notices one, catches it, and holds on to it until the mysterious girl shows up at the light house. This question of why do some stay and other disappear was on my mind and is also on Ryou’s too. Ryou and Eiko wonder what the difference is between them. Jun also had one that remained for a long time. He held on to a whale feather as a memento of his sister and wore it as a necklace, but when he took it off and through it into the bay he channeled a persona of her sister. These things have a direct link with personas and possibly have an effect on the mysterious girl herself. She didn’t appear before the group until the hospital sempai went to the seaside with the feather that did not disappear.
The Mysterious Girl: We don’t know much about this red headed mystery yet other than she leaves whale feathers behind wherever she goes and that she likes to appear in various places as an observer. What we can assume is that she is not physically present but is actually a persona. This persona-like anatomy of hers is revealed when Shin’s persona slashes through her body and she breaks into particles, but is left unaffected. She cold be the persona of a person that is far off, she could be just an entity that takes on the form of a persona-like being, or she could be a projection of herself. The idea that she is a persona being controlled by someone from far away is most likely not right because she doesn’t look like a normal persona and normally there is a physical-mental connection between the body and the persona (ex: flying). The idea that she is actually a free moving persona-like entity could be accurate due to the fact that she leaves whale feathers wherever she goes. The feathers could be sustaining her presence and existence. Chances are is that she is actually a persona-like projection of the spirit of herself. This idea is much like the first one but doesn’t exactly call her a persona being controlled. In fact, it is a combination of the first and second theories. Somewhere, someone who looks just like her leaves her body and moves around in that entity leaving whale feathers as mental and physical evidence. The feathers that disappear could be her mental properties and the feathers that remain are the physical. These are just far fetched ideas that I have about the girl. The only real thing that is most likely right is that she is the head of the organization that has been oppressing Ryou in past episodes. They commented on having a new leader and that leader could be her. The fact that they are stealing personas from people could be to buff up their own persona or to give to her. I don’t really know the benefits of stealing a persona yet, but the girl shows interest in personas so chances are they are gathering power for her.
